Nature reserve Hinteres Lauterbrunnental

In 1947, Pro Natura acquired the alp Untersteinberg with earnings from the Schoggitaler, a chocolate bar sold to support important projects for the preservation of natural areas as well as the promotion and preservation of native flora and fauna. With the purchase of the alp Breitlauenen in 1954, the protected area was further extended by five square kilometers. Since 1960, the entire valley (around 26 km²) is protected by law for nature conservation.

This stunning alpine landscape is distinctive and characterized by its diversity of plants. This biodiversity is fed by numerous water sources such as the Holdribach and Talbach. These spring from the edge of glaciers, with some having spectacular rock waterfalls. The many different mountain streams are home to a great variety of aquatic insects. In particular, the stoneflies, which are bioindicators for healthy waterbodies, are represented with around 20 different species. The valley offers varied and thriving vegetation systems with a beautiful bog and many colorful mountain meadows. One of the reasons for the rich flora is the proximity of areas with silicate or limestone rocks. As a result of the richness of plant species and structures, a high number of insect species can be found. As an example, the protected area is home to around one third of all native butterfly species. Furthermore, 66 bird species have been sighted in the Hinteres Lauterbrunnental, with almost half of them making the valley their breeding grounds. Typical breeding birds are the Hazel Grouse, European Robin, Alpine Citril Finch, Alpine Accentor and Rock Ptarmigan. Chamois and Alpine Ibex can sometimes be seen clambering on the mountain slopes.

The ranger Marcel Pfister focuses on supervision and provides visitors with valuable resources to understand and appreciate this special area. In addition, his tasks also include maintenance work.
